According to Professor Nguyen Nang An, President of the Asthma, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology Association, asthma is a significant burden on society due to treatment costs that exceed those of tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS combined. The average direct treatment cost, including medications, tests, and hospital fees, is over $300 per person per year. Additionally, there are costs associated with lost productivity as patients take time off work or school during treatment.
Vietnam has over 4 million asthma patients, accounting for 5% of the population. With appropriate treatment, the rate of good control that allows individuals to live nearly normal lives is 85%. However, in Vietnam, only 5% of asthma patients achieve good control, and approximately 3,000 people die from this illness each year (Professor Nang An believes the actual number is much higher). The primary reason is the patients’ complacency, often stopping medication when symptoms improve, which can worsen their condition.
Professor An advises those with asthma to join asthma clubs to share experiences and treatment knowledge, while also receiving regular reminders to adhere to their treatment plans. Currently, the Hanoi Asthma Club attracts over 300 patients, with more than 90% showing improvement after two years of treatment.
Individuals with asthma or those interested in the condition can call 04.9438933 for free consultation. Consultation hours are from 8 AM to 8 PM daily (except Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays).
