According to a U.S. survey firm, businesses should avoid installing Microsoft’s new generation operating system at least until 2008. The reason is that most of the security enhancements in this version are already available in the form of third-party add-ons for Windows XP.
A report by Gartner titled “10 Reasons to Care and Not to Care About Microsoft Windows Vista” states that this operating system version offers enterprise PC users enhancements that are incremental rather than entirely new. Therefore, analysts suggest that Vista (set to launch in 2006) should only be deployed on new computers and after a two-year exploration period.
Additionally, Gartner notes that Internet Explorer 7 in Microsoft’s Vista will feature improved security to prevent users from switching to Firefox. This new operating system will also include a highly-rated personal firewall, but Gartner still advises laptop users to have at least one separate firewall to protect their devices.
In the aforementioned report, Gartner also mentions that the promised improvements in search functionality in Vista have actually been provided by other companies such as Google.
