A massive cloud resembling a tsunami has enveloped the sky over a city in northern India, leaving local residents in awe.
A bizarre cloud resembling a tsunami.
The Daily Mail (UK) reported that the enormous cloud formed as the monsoon hit Haridwar, in the state of Uttarakhand, which is currently under a severe rain warning. The entire northern region of India has been experiencing heavy rainfall in recent days.
A video posted on Twitter on July 9 shows the large cloud resembling a tsunami engulfing the sky. The video went viral on social media, with many viewers finding it quite frightening, while others described it as a spectacular sight (video below, source: Daily Mail).
Indian media later explained this rare phenomenon as a cap cloud. Cap clouds are low-lying clouds typically found at the horizon. They are formed by thunderstorms and usually have a flow of dry and cold air in front of the cloud. Rain typically follows after the cap cloud passes.
The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as heavy rains sweep across the state.
As heavy rainfall wreaks havoc throughout northern India, the army and National Disaster Response Force have stepped in to enhance rescue and relief operations in the affected states.
India often faces severe flooding during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from June to September each year. Scientists also believe that the monsoon is becoming increasingly unpredictable due to the effects of climate change and global warming, resulting in more frequent landslides and flash floods occurring in northern India.
