New evidence regarding the significant warming of the world has just been published in the scientific journal Science. The latest research indicates that the Northern Hemisphere has never been as warm as it is today in the last 1200 years.
Researchers suggest that the new analyses are clearer compared to previous studies. Earlier results also indicated similar findings but faced criticism for being flawed due to technical shortcomings.
The average temperature has risen rapidly over the past few decades, with last year being the warmest on record.
Researchers assert that the warming conditions observed in the 20th century have not occurred for thousands of years, at least in the Northern Hemisphere. The study’s results were presented in the international assessment report on climate change in 2001. Critics dismissed the conclusions, arguing that extreme heat periods in some regions of the Earth had occurred since the Medieval times.
The new research aims to address the points raised by critics by examining temperature patterns across regions over the millennium. The findings indicate that while there have been periods of warmth, it was only by the end of the 20th century that temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere began to rise uniformly. The data analysis was also conducted in a simpler manner compared to previous studies to avoid accusations that calculation issues distorted the climate picture.
Scientists from the UK conducted the research, collecting evidence from ice core samples and fossils from various locations, ranging from North America and the Northern European Peninsula to Siberia.
They also utilized records from the Medieval period and eyewitness accounts of unusual weather phenomena over the centuries.
