The Internet search giant – Google has recently decided to transition its internal servers from Intel to AMD chips.
As of now, Google operates over 200,000 internal servers worldwide. In recent months, new processor purchasing contracts have primarily been awarded to AMD’s 64-bit Opteron chips.
Interestingly, Intel’s CEO, Paul Otellini, is a member of Google’s board of directors. This has led to confusion regarding the shift, raising questions about whether Otellini has any significant influence over Google’s decision-making.
Intel’s setback has been met with enthusiasm from AMD, which has experienced a fourfold growth in the enterprise market. Analysts predict that AMD’s stock could rise to $0.33 per share in the first quarter of this year, up from the current $0.31 per share. The Google board is also optimistic that the company’s stock price will increase to $1.70 per share this year.
