As of the afternoon of November 20, over 70,000 birds have died or been culled due to illness across 19 wards and communes in 9 districts of Hai Phong.
Four individuals suspected of being infected with the H5N1 avian influenza virus, namely Tran Huy Toan, Vu Van Nhat, Nguyen Thi Thao, and Nguyen Thi Tan, have been admitted to hospitals in Hai Phong and Hanoi for treatment. Among them, Tran Huy Toan is a veterinarian and an epidemiological officer at the Hai Phong Animal Health Department. All four patients are currently awaiting test results and reside in Tien Lang District.
On the afternoon of November 19, the Chairman of the Hai Phong People’s Committee, Trinh Quang Su, convened an emergency meeting to enhance efforts in preventing avian influenza and potential human pandemic. To combat the outbreak, Hai Phong has allocated immediate funds to support poultry farmers and affected localities, as well as to increase staffing by adding 30 personnel to the Animal Health Department.
Additionally, the Hai Phong leadership has quickly signed off on the establishment of 4 inter-sectoral quarantine stations at the city’s entry and exit points, operating 24/7. They have also formed an inter-sectoral inspection team to oversee livestock breeding, transportation, slaughtering, and trading of poultry and poultry products.
