Thanh Hoa: Avian Influenza Outbreak in 11 Communes
As of yesterday (November 13), the Animal Health Department (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) announced that Hai Phong and Ninh Binh have also reported outbreaks.
In a conversation with reporters on the afternoon of November 13, Mr. Vu Van Tam, Deputy Chairman of the Ninh Binh Provincial People’s Committee, stated that the locality has declared an outbreak in seven communes across four districts: Yen Khanh, Yen Mo, Kim Son, and Tam Diep Town. According to Mr. Tam, the outbreak began in Yen Dong Commune (Yen Mo) on November 8. Currently, “emergency measures to prevent the avian influenza outbreak have been urgently and seriously implemented in the affected areas”, Mr. Tam said.
Yesterday afternoon (November 13), Mr. Bui Xuan Dong, Head of the Animal Health Sub-department of Hai Phong, reported that outbreaks of avian influenza had occurred in three districts: Vinh Bao, An Lao, and Kien Thuy, resulting in the death of over 1,000 chickens and ducks. Notably, the infected poultry are dying rapidly with a high mortality rate, indicating a potential change in the virus’s virulence.
* As of November 13, 2005, avian influenza outbreaks have appeared in 11 communes and towns in Thanh Hoa Province, including the districts of Hau Loc, Quang Xuong, Ba Thuc, the town of Bim Son, and Thanh Hoa City. Notably, in Quang Thinh Commune, Quang Xuong District, there have been four major outbreak sites in the villages of Truong Son, Gia Loc, Quyet Thang, and Thinh Ngoc. This commune has the highest number of outbreak sites in Thanh Hoa Province, with over 3,000 chickens and ducks dying from the disease.
