The Haiti Civil Protection Agency (CPA) reported on August 15 that the death toll from the earthquake the day before has risen to 7,097 people.
The 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti on the afternoon of August 14 (local time), approximately 125 km west of the capital Port-au-Prince.
Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry acknowledged that the earthquake caused “widespread damage” and declared a one-month state of emergency.

Initial reports indicate that over 700 buildings have collapsed, including hospitals and schools. At least 3,778 homes have been destroyed, with significant damage to infrastructure and roads.
There are concerns that the earthquake may lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases in Haiti. CPA Director Jerry Chandler stated that they will send rescue teams to the affected areas to provide assistance.
Many countries, including the United States, have offered humanitarian aid to Haiti, the poorest island nation in the Caribbean.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that occurred in Haiti this morning. We extend our deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones or witnessed their homes and businesses destroyed,” said U.S. President Joe Biden. He also authorized USAID Administrator Samantha Power to lead the effort to support Haiti if requested.

However, Prime Minister Henry stated at a press conference that he would not request international assistance until officials assess the extent of the damage. Haiti is still recovering from the severe earthquake in 2010 that killed at least 200,000 people.
Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Grace is forecasted to hit Haiti between August 16 and August 17.
“The people of Haiti are not only dealing with the earthquake and aftershocks but also this impending tropical storm. Thousands of lives could be at risk,” said U.S. geophysical expert William Barnhart in an interview with ABC News.
