In Hawaii, the remote land of the United States, there exists a species of spider that conjures up images not of terrifying eight-legged creatures, but of the “happy spider“, adorned with cheerful smiling faces on their backs!
The “happy spider“, also known as the “smiling spider“, showcases vibrant colors including black, red, and bright yellow. (Let me remind you that not every spider needs to carry a name that’s unpleasant). There are approximately 17,000 species of spiders around the world. Most of these spiders do little more than search for food, find mates, reproduce, weave webs, and evade danger.
What makes the “happy spider” more interesting than its relatives is its unique genetic characteristics, which impart distinct structural features. Each spider is a unique little artist, with no two being alike. The female spider serves as a role model for women, as she diligently incubates her eggs and guards them closely until they hatch, after which she continues to hunt for food to nourish her young.
If you’re not busy surfing the waves, you can explore the lush forests of the Big Island and O’ahu, where you have the rare opportunity to admire the happy spiders that can be found nowhere else in the world!
