In line with global trends in biotechnology development, Ho Chi Minh City is undertaking a regional project in Southeast Asia to establish a biotechnology center, which is one of the key projects of the city for the period of 2006-2010.
The Ho Chi Minh City Biotechnology Center (HCMBIOTECH), covering an area of approximately 23 hectares, will serve as a research and application hub for genetic technology in production, particularly in the manufacturing of vaccines and biopharmaceuticals.
Dr. Duong Hoa So, Director of HCMBIOTECH, stated that the center represents a new model with four primary functions: basic research, applied research on scientific topics related to biotechnology serving agriculture, healthcare, and the environment.
The center will facilitate the transfer of technology, provide consulting services, and implement modern biotechnological techniques to produce biological products. It will also conduct practical training to enhance the expertise of scientific and technical staff in biotechnology to support research and production efforts, as well as organize business operations and commercialize products related to biotechnology.
It is expected that within three years (2006-2008), the center will complete Phase 1, which includes the construction of an administrative building, experimental areas, laboratories, and workspaces for approximately 200 research staff. Phase 2 of the project is anticipated to be completed by 2010.
As of now, the training of personnel for the center has already begun, with the selection of scientific staff being sent for training both domestically and internationally. Dr. Duong Hoa So emphasized that this is a crucial task and the biggest concern for the center’s leadership at present. The scientific staff of the center must consist of at least 200 individuals to meet development needs by 2010.
