A Woman Receives a Lucky Star for Escaping Death When a Meteorite Crashed Through Her Roof.
A woman in British Columbia narrowly escaped disaster when a meteorite crashed through her roof and landed on the pillow beside her while she was sleeping.
Ruth Hamilton from Golden, British Columbia, woke up to a loud crashing noise and dust falling on her face. She saw a strange rock lying on the pillow next to her.
The strange object that penetrated Ruth Hamilton’s roof and “landed” beside her is a meteorite.
“I jumped up and turned on the light, completely unaware of what was happening. I was extremely frightened and immediately called 911,” Ruth Hamilton said.
The police quickly arrived at her home to investigate the incident. They confirmed that it was not debris from nearby construction at Kicking Horse Canyon.
By contacting workers at a nearby Canyon project, the police learned that there had been a bright flash in the sky accompanied by a loud bang that night.
Several people had witnessed the meteor shower early that evening over Lake Louise, about 84 km to the east. After verifying the incident, the police announced that the strange object that penetrated Ruth Hamilton’s roof and “landed” beside her was indeed a meteorite.
Ruth Hamilton stated, “I was scared to death at that moment. I thought someone had jumped into my house or that a gun had gone off. I feel so lucky that it was just a meteorite falling from the sky.”
According to the Arizona State University Meteorite Research Center, meteorites originate from asteroids, rocky bodies orbiting the sun, and are approximately 4.5 billion years old.
Ruth Hamilton was not injured, but the flying object left a hole in her roof. She plans to keep the meteorite as a memento for future generations of her family.
“I was incredibly surprised to learn that it was a meteorite from the sky, possibly billions of years old. I think life is very precious, and it can disappear at any moment, even when you believe you are in the safest and most secure place, like in your own bed. I don’t enjoy stargazing or studying astronomy. For me, going through something like this is more than enough,” Ruth Hamilton shared.
