Heavy rainfall is forecasted to persist in Northern Vietnam and the provinces from Thanh Hóa to Hà Tĩnh until today (May 24), with a gradual decrease in rainfall intensity expected starting tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Central Highlands and Southern Vietnam will experience heavy rain over the coming days.
The northern provinces and North Central region (Thanh Hóa – Hà Tĩnh) have been experiencing prolonged heavy rainfall since May 20 due to the influence of a low-pressure trough extending through North Central Vietnam, combined with a strong upper-level wind convergence zone.
Last night (May 23), Northern Vietnam and North Central region continued to see moderate to heavy rain, with some areas experiencing very heavy rainfall (measured from 7 PM on May 23 to 3 AM on May 24). Notable rainfall amounts include 72.8mm in Cao Răm (Hòa Bình), 92.6mm in Quân Chu (Thái Nguyên), 86.2mm in Minh Quang (Tuyên Quang), 74.8mm in Đập Đáy (Hà Nội), and 240.8mm in Xuân Khánh (Thanh Hóa).
Forecast for today (May 24) indicates that this will be the peak of the ongoing heavy rainfall. Northern Vietnam and the North Central region will experience moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms, with common rainfall amounts ranging from 30-60mm, and some areas exceeding 80mm. Specifically, the regions of Lào Cai, Yên Bái, Hà Giang, Tuyên Quang, Cao Bằng, Bắc Kạn, Vĩnh Phúc, Thái Nguyên, Hòa Bình, and Thanh Hóa are expected to receive 60-100mm, with some areas over 130mm. The capital city of Hà Nội will also see moderate to heavy rain with potential for very heavy rain and thunderstorms today.
Northern provinces and North Central region will continue to experience heavy to very heavy rain today (May 24).
During thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds. The meteorological agency warns of a very high risk of flash floods and landslides in the mountainous provinces of Northern and North Central Vietnam, as well as flooding in low-lying areas due to prolonged heavy rain.
Starting tomorrow (May 25), widespread moderate to heavy rain in Northern Vietnam is expected to gradually decrease in intensity. However, in the midland and mountainous areas of Northern Vietnam, thunderstorms may continue until June 3, with localized heavy rain expected, particularly in the late afternoon and evening. The lowland areas of Northern Vietnam will experience intermittent sunny weather from May 26 to June 3, with occasional showers and thunderstorms, especially scattered rain on the night of May 27.
In the provinces from Thanh Hóa to Thừa Thiên Huế, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue until May 27, with rain mainly occurring in the late afternoon and evening. From May 28 to June 2, this region will experience intermittent sunny weather with occasional showers and thunderstorms.
In the Central Highlands, due to the influence of the southwest monsoon, from now until May 27, there will be afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms, with localized heavy rain amounts of about 20-50mm/24h, and some areas exceeding 70mm/24h. From May 28, this area will see scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day, with localized moderate to heavy rain.
Southern Vietnam is also affected by the southwest monsoon, leading to afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms from now until May 29, with localized heavy rain possible. From May 30, this region will experience scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day, with localized moderate to heavy rain. Thunderstorms may bring tornadoes, lightning, hail, and strong winds.
