Aerial footage reveals the massive scale of The Line, Saudi Arabia’s linear city project traversing the desert.
New footage released by drone company OT Sky showcases the super city within The Line project in Saudi Arabia, as reported by Arabian Business on October 21. The aerial video captures numerous excavators working in the vast, empty desert. These machines are digging a wide trench, where the foundations of the linear city are expected to be laid.
The Line is part of the ambitious NEOM project, which has an estimated cost of $500 billion. Once completed, the city will be 200 meters wide and stretch up to 170 kilometers long. Residents will be able to travel from one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes via high-speed rail. The city will feature a mirrored exterior, standing approximately 500 meters tall, surpassing both the Empire State Building (450 meters) and the Eiffel Tower (330 meters).
The Line is designed to accommodate 9 million residents and will be built over an area of about 34 km2. It will offer a full range of amenities, including public parks, pedestrian areas, schools, and workplaces. Residents will have access to all facilities within a 5-minute walk. With no roads, cars, or emissions, the city will operate entirely on 100% renewable energy.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman first announced plans for The Line in January 2021. The project aims to diversify Saudi Arabia’s economy and reduce its dependence on oil. “The Line will address the challenges humanity faces in urban living today and pave the way for alternative ways of life,” the Crown Prince stated.
The Line is located in Tabuk Province, in northwestern Saudi Arabia. From this location, it is possible to reach 40% of global destinations within a 6-hour flight. The climate within the city is designed to remain temperate year-round. Additionally, open and green spaces throughout the city will enhance the comfort of residents, workers, and visitors alike.
