During the summary conference on epidemic prevention in the southern region held in Ho Chi Minh City, the Pasteur Institute of Ho Chi Minh City reported that dengue fever (DF) is at risk of becoming an epidemic in several southern provinces early in 2006, specifically in An Giang, Dong Thap, Ho Chi Minh City, and Binh Duong.
These are the localities that saw a significant increase in dengue cases at the end of 2005, with a high rate of positive virus isolation.
In particular, in Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to the dengue virus type 2 that is circulating and causing dengue fever like in many other provinces, the dengue virus type 1 has also become quite common.
In 2005, the total number of dengue cases in the southern region exceeded 44,000, with 47 deaths reported. The provinces with the highest number of dengue cases were Dong Thap (6,658 cases), Ho Chi Minh City (6,254 cases), and An Giang (2,854 cases).
