The Ziel building stands approximately 34 meters tall, featuring 15 floors and 40 apartments, surrounded by greenery watered by a rainwater collection system.
The Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, in collaboration with the Argentine architecture firm Monoblock, has designed a new high-rise building named Ziel, aiming to blend rural housing with urban apartments, as reported by New Atlas on May 11.

The unique exterior of Ziel evokes the image of Jenga. The building will be situated in Montevideo, Uruguay, standing at about 34 meters tall, comprising 15 floors and 40 apartments finished with four different types of stone. The design concept aims to provide families with more greenery compared to typical apartment buildings, allowing them to feel they do not need to leave the city.
“In Montevideo, like many other cities, many people leave when they start a family, buying a villa in the countryside, which reduces the city’s vitality. What if we could offer the villa they desire while keeping them in the city, providing a blend of urban and rural lifestyles? We are striving to create a solution that combines both,” explained Jacob van Rijs, co-founder of MVRDV.

The center of the building features a spacious courtyard, maximizing natural light and ventilation for each apartment. The apartments are primarily three-bedroom units, each with its own balcony. In addition to the residential units, the 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th floors will have large communal courtyards. These courtyards will be planted with numerous trees and will offer ocean views. The rooftop will include a lounge, dining area, swimming pool, and green spaces. The lower floors will house a gym, spa, and restaurant.
Ziel is expected to meet LEED Platinum green building standards. The structure will feature numerous overhanging roofs to reduce heat from the sun. Solar panels will also help the building utilize electricity efficiently. Furthermore, Ziel’s abundant greenery will be watered through a rainwater collection system. Currently, MVRDV has not announced the anticipated completion date for the building.
