According to Sputnik News (Russia), aerial images show that the sinkhole appeared at the Lundin Mining copper mine operated by Canada. This incident has caused a stir on social media in recent days.
A team of experts from the National Geology and Mining Service in the Sernageomin region of Chile has been dispatched to investigate the situation. Authorities revealed that the sinkhole is significantly deep, approximately 200 meters. They have closed off the area from the entrance to the Alcaparrosa mining site, which is located near the sinkhole, to ensure public safety.
“We did not detect any material underneath, but we observed the presence of a significant amount of water,” said David Montenegro, Director of the National Geology and Mining Service in the Sernageomin region, in a statement.
Chilean authorities have reported that they found a substantial amount of water during the initial investigation. However, officials did not discover any material within the sinkhole.
No local residents were affected by the sinkhole, as the nearest house is over 600 meters away, while the closest residential areas or public services are nearly 1 kilometer from the sinkhole.
