Family in Florida, USA Shocked to Discover Giant Beehive Containing Approximately 80,000 Bees in Their Bathroom Wall.
The moment a beehive measuring about 2 meters tall began oozing honey from behind a wall in a home in Florida left many people in shock.
The video capturing the scene of approximately 80,000 bees clinging to the wall has garnered over 3.3 million views on social media.
Stefanie and Dan Graham, residents of St. Petersburg, Florida, were utterly astonished when they discovered the massive swarm of bees right in their family bathroom.
The homeowners reported that they noticed the swarm after hearing a continuous buzzing sound while using the shower. They observed that occasionally, a random bee would escape from the wall.
A few years prior, Stefanie and Dan Graham had removed a small beehive near the shower but never expected the bees to return and multiply significantly.
About 80,000 bees live in the hive and there is approximately 45.3 kg of honey.
Bee expert Elisha Bixler was called in to remove the hive from the wall. Initially, she used a thermal imaging gun to locate the hive. Then, Elisha Bixler carefully dismantled the wall in the bathroom.
Elisha Bixler stated: “I pressed my finger into the hive, and honey poured out everywhere. Honey was all over the walls, the floor, even on my shoes and the doorknob. I had to take down the wall to get the entire hive out. The hive was about 2 meters long; it was unbelievable.”
Elisha Bixler estimates that around 80,000 bees were living in the hive, producing approximately 45.3 kg of honey. After safely extracting the queen bee, Elisha Bixler plans to relocate the swarm to her farm.
According to the United States Geological Survey, a honeybee can collect about 18 kg of pollen and 120 kg of nectar each year. Data released by the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) in March 2020 indicates that there are approximately 2.8 million honeybee colonies in the United States.
