The British Council has announced that students are invited to participate in an international competition open to all high school students, undergraduate engineering students, and recent graduates from the United Kingdom, APEC member countries, and the Asia-Pacific region.
The competition, titled “Designing Earthquake-Resistant Houses – IDEERS 2006” (Introducing and demonstrating earthquake engineering research in schools), will take place from September 22 to 24, 2006, in Taipei. This event is organized by the British Council Taiwan, the University of Bristol, and the National Center for Research on Earthquakes in Taiwan.
To participate in the competition, students need to form a team of four members and may invite one supervising teacher to accompany them. Participants will be required to design and construct a model of an earthquake-resistant house using materials provided by the organizers. Prizes include: First Prize: NT$30,000, Second Prize: NT$20,000, Third Prize: NT$10,000, and several encouragement awards. For international participants, the British Council Taiwan will cover all accommodation, travel, and transportation costs for five days, but teams must bear the cost of their round-trip airfare.
