The habit of urinating while standing in men (also known as “standing urination”) is prevalent in most countries around the world. However, this method is not scientifically accurate.
On May 16, the data analysis company YouGov released the results of an interesting survey analyzing the rates of men urinating while standing versus sitting by country.
According to the survey, in Germany, up to 62% of men prefer to sit down while urinating. In contrast, in other countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, only about 23-24% of surveyed men do this.

Additionally, younger men seem to prefer sitting down to urinate more than older men.
So, what is the scientifically correct way to urinate?
According to Gerald Collins, a urologist at Alexandra Hospital in the UK, sitting down to urinate is better for men. This is simply because this posture helps you empty the bladder more effectively.
Moreover, when we stand, the pelvic muscles are tense, which does not provide comfort. When you sit down, the muscles relax, making the act of urinating quicker and more convenient.
This practice offers numerous health benefits, such as avoiding the risk of urinary tract infections or bladder stones due to urine remaining in the bladder during urination.
Previously, a study was conducted involving men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. The results confirmed that patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) could urinate more easily when they tried sitting down.
“Sitting posture is the best position for men with urination issues. This is clinically important, as residual urine can lead to complications such as cystitis and bladder stones,” the study noted.
