Researchers from the Davis Center for Medicine in California, USA, recommend that young mothers breastfeed their babies for at least the first six months of life.
This recommendation comes after a survey of 2,277 infants aged 6 to 24 months conducted by the National Institute of Nutrition and Health in the United States.
The results indicate that infants who are exclusively breastfed for only the first four months are at a higher risk of developing pneumonia and otitis media compared to those breastfed for six months, with the risk being doubled.
Only about 2% of infants breastfed for more than six months experience pneumonia, compared to 6% of those breastfed for four months. For otitis media, the rates are 20% in infants breastfed for six months versus 27% in those breastfed for four months.
Dr. Caroline ChanTi stated: “Breast milk not only protects the respiratory system but also has highly effective anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.”
