The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum that embodies the distinctive features of Islamic art from nearly 400 years ago.
The Tāj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India. Mughal Emperor Shāh Jahān (of Persian origin, who ascended to the throne in 1627); in Persian, Shah Jahan (شاه جها) means “the ruler of the world,” commissioned its construction for his wife Mumtaz Mahal after her death.
Construction began in 1631 and was completed in 1653. There are some debates regarding who designed the Taj Mahal; it is clear that a team of designers and craftsmen were responsible for the design of the structure, with Ustad Ahmad Lahauri being regarded as the chief architect.
