Instant noodles are a familiar and popular food for many people. Although they are very convenient and tasty, many believe that they are not good for health, contributing to weight gain and obesity.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Vu, a molecular biology expert in medicine and a postdoctoral researcher at the City of Hope Research Institute in California, USA, when consuming instant noodles, individuals should pay attention to the salt content in this food. The salt level in instant noodles is often high, which can negatively affect various organs in the body, especially for individuals with high blood pressure and kidney disease…
As a guideline, we should not consume more than 2g of salt per day. The salt content in each packet of noodles can exceed 3g, surpassing the recommended daily intake. To reduce salt intake, you can decrease the amount of seasoning that comes with the noodle package.

“The protein content in instant noodles is very low. The energy provided by instant noodles primarily comes from carbohydrates. The low calorie source from protein can make you feel fatigued. To counter this, you can supplement your protein intake from other sources such as milk, shrimp, or meat…”, stated Dr. Vu.
This expert also emphasized that the fiber content in instant noodles is also very low. On average, women need 21-25g of fiber, while men need 31-35g. A low fiber intake can lead to poor bowel movements, causing constipation and reduced nutrient absorption. A deficiency in fiber can negatively affect nutrient uptake. Therefore, you should also pay attention to your fiber sources when eating instant noodles by adding vegetables and fruits.
“Lastly, there’s the issue of monosodium glutamate (MSG). This seasoning enhances the flavor of the noodle packet. However, excessive consumption is associated with obesity and poisoning, especially in those sensitive to MSG. The vitamin and mineral content in instant noodles is very limited, so you should supplement them to balance your nutrition”, Dr. Vu advised.
He recommends that people can eat instant noodles when they are short on time. In many cases, instant noodles are inexpensive, making them a common choice for students and individuals with low incomes. However, relying solely on instant noodles will not provide enough energy; over time, your body will become fatigued and lack the energy for daily activities and work.
Therefore, you should try to alternate instant noodles with main meals, adding a variety of nutrients to your bowl of noodles to ensure your body receives adequate nutrition.
