From home to the entrance, to workplaces, playgrounds, shopping centers, entertainment venues… and many other places such as hospitals, schools, and public transportation… the presence of cameras is ubiquitous. The activities of myself and many others are being recorded.
On the positive side, cameras help ensure security. However, they can also be a double-edged sword, leading to numerous consequences when these images and personal information can be accessed by malicious actors who hack into camera software and steal data.
Ways Information Can Be Breached from Cameras
There are many significant risks associated with surveillance cameras, including unauthorized data collection, which involves gathering information from organizations, institutions, and users for the purpose of fraud and theft; gaining control over devices to launch cyber attacks and spread malware; and potentially leaking state secrets, which could impact national security and public order…
On the positive side, cameras help ensure security.
Methods of breaching and leaking information from surveillance cameras can occur through:
- Taking control of cameras by hacking the software of faulty cameras or when users keep the default password during installation without changing it, making it easy for malicious individuals to gain access.
- Network intrusions, during the process of data transmission from the camera to the information management server.
Once they obtain the information, malicious actors may use it for personal gain, sell it for profit, blackmail victims, or share it on social media platforms.
Identifying and Preventing Camera Breaches
According to Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh – Vice President of the Vietnam Information Security Association, to prevent unauthorized access to cameras, users should pay attention to the following:
- Immediately change the camera password, avoiding the use of default passwords.
- Purchase cameras from reputable brands.
- Install cameras in areas such as living rooms, parking spaces, and communal areas, and avoid placing them in private locations.
Mr. Ngo Tuan Anh also mentioned some signs that can indicate camera breaches, such as:
- Unusual sounds through the two-way audio feature.
- Cameras turning on by themselves after being turned off and the LED light illuminating, indicating that your security system has been compromised.
- If you notice the camera’s viewing angle shifting automatically to different positions within your home that you did not set up, it is very likely that an intruder is controlling the camera to gather information inside your house.
