Hot air balloons do not have a fixed landing position as they fly with the wind. Therefore, the pilot must actively search for a landing spot after a certain period of time.
A typical hot air balloon can maintain flight for about one hour. After one hour of flying, the pilot must actively look for a safe landing spot with the assistance of ground technicians.
According to Wickers World, the hot air balloon pilot is equipped with a walkie-talkie connected to ground technical staff. When preparing to land, the pilot will communicate with the technical team to help find a suitable landing location.
A safe landing area is usually a spacious place, far from power lines. Typically, the landing site will be a field or an open space. This location should be near a road for the ground technical team to easily access.
The pilot and supporting technicians need to know the exact dimensions of the landing area, which must be appropriate for the size of the hot air balloon. Smaller hot air balloons are generally easier to maneuver and can land in tighter spaces.

Landing
After finding a suitable landing position, the pilot will open the vent to release air from the balloon’s envelope. This action causes the hot air balloon to descend. An experienced balloon pilot can estimate the necessary descent speed to ensure a smooth landing process.
As the hot air balloon descends, the pilot can adjust the landing speed by releasing air or opening the burner to heat the air and slow the descent rate.
In many cases, the landing path may be close to bushes, causing passengers in the hot air balloon to fear a collision. However, the pilot has complete control over the flight path.
Typically, the balloon pilot will choose the flattest and least rugged landing area possible. However, it is not always possible to find an ideal landing spot as it also depends on the wind speed. When landing in rugged areas, the hot air balloon may bounce a few times before coming to a complete stop.
Passengers should not panic as this does not pose a danger. Some thrill-seekers even enjoy landing on uneven terrain.
After Landing
When the hot air balloon comes to a complete stop, ground staff will hold the basket for passengers to disembark. At the same time, the pilot will fully open the valve to release the remaining air, allowing the balloon to deflate completely for packing.
In many countries, landing a hot air balloon is also a time for celebration, with champagne and bread being served. Champagne was initially used in France to compensate farmers who suffered losses due to their fields being damaged by hot air balloons.
