According to guidelines from the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), residents can easily perform rapid antigen tests for SARS-CoV-2, commonly known as rapid tests, at home.
The process consists of 7 basic steps:
- Step 1: Prepare the buffer solution tube according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Step 2: Self-collect a sample in front of a mirror or assist other family members in sample collection.
- Step 3: Rotate the swab in the buffer solution tube, dipping the swab up and down in the buffer solution (10 times).
- Step 4: Move your hand to the upper part of the tube, squeeze tightly, and slowly pull the swab out. Ensure that all remaining liquid on the swab tip is squeezed down into the bottom of the tube.
- Step 5: Securely close the filter cap, and shake the solution in the tube by hand (5 times).
- Step 6: Write the name of each family member on the corresponding test tray. Add 3-5 drops of the solution into the test well.
- Step 7: Read the results after 15-30 minutes according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
The Manchester Communication Academy (UK) states that after performing a rapid Covid-19 test, there will be 3 possible result cases:
- Negative: Line C appears, line T does not appear.
- Positive: Both colored lines appear, including a faint line T.
- Invalid result (which may be due to incorrect testing or a defective product): Neither line appears; or line T appears, but line C does not.

Important notes when using rapid Covid-19 tests:
- Each rapid test kit is for single use and for one person only.
- Store the test kit at room temperature or in a cool, dry place (2-30 degrees Celsius). Do not expose it to direct sunlight or store it in the refrigerator or freezer.
- The product should be used at room temperature (15-30 degrees Celsius). If the kit has been stored below 15 degrees Celsius, allow it to reach normal room temperature for 30 minutes before use.
- Do not use the test swab if the packaging is damaged.
- Avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes before testing to prevent inaccurate results.
- Children under 12 years old should seek assistance from an adult.
- Read the results within 15 to 30 minutes to avoid inaccuracies.
