Hewlett-Packard (HP) has launched a new chipset for its mid-range and high-end servers. The new chipset will enhance performance by 30% compared to the current Pinnacles chipset.
The new sx2000 chipset (codenamed Arches) was originally designed for servers using the dual-core Montecito chip (which Intel is set to release at the end of 2006).
Due to the delayed release of the Montecito dual-core chip, HP has adapted Arches to support servers equipped with Intel’s current Madison chip, with future plans for servers using Montecito chips. This chipset is currently utilized in Integrity servers such as the rx7640, rx8640, and Superdome.
HP’s Chairman and CEO Mark Hurd stated that over the next five years, the company will invest $5 billion in research and development, software, hardware, and services focused on Integrity servers equipped with Itanium processors.
