Some internet users have discovered a strange image on Google Maps: black streaks on the ocean that resemble the expression of a face. Social media users have made various speculations, with some even worrying that “the ocean is angry.” However, others have offered more plausible explanations.
Recently, an internet user in the United States was surprised to find a peculiar image on Google Maps: large black streaks that look like shadows, forming a shape resembling a facial expression in the waters near Santa Barbara, California.
This user posted the image on social media with the caption: “What is this strange thing on the sea?”
Immediately, the image attracted the attention of many netizens, some of whom remarked that the “face” on the ocean looked “spooky.”

Everyone was curious about these mysterious “streaks” and questioned what they could be. Comments included:
“Clearly a face. The ocean is getting angry.”
“I think it looks like Morse code. This must be a secret message.”
“Could it be a message sent to aliens? Because such a large symbol could be seen from high above.”
Some people suggested that these might be ships accidentally arranged to form a face, but this idea was challenged since ships do not typically have such unusual shapes. After all, would there really be a round ship as depicted in the image?
While the debate continued without reaching any conclusion, one person suggested that these could be oil rigs.
Subsequently, another user searched for images on Google Street View and claimed that if one looks closely at a Google Street View image (shown above) taken from the Santa Barbara coastline, three faint oil rigs could be seen in the distance. This explanation was deemed the most reasonable by many, prompting netizens to call on anyone living near that coastal area to take clearer photos to verify if those are indeed oil rigs.
