IT professionals seem to be under more pressure than those in other fields. 80% of individuals working in this area report feeling stressed even before arriving at work.
A survey by SkillSoft (USA) also revealed that one-third of IT professionals interviewed stated they cannot work effectively when their bosses are continuously urging them or hovering over their shoulders.
A technology consultant expressed: “All day I am ‘terrorized’ by absurd calls from people who lack even the most basic knowledge about computers and printers. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to show them where the power button is. And just when I think I can breathe easy after resolving a technical issue, my boss appears and demands to know why customers are complaining so much.”
Kevin Young, Managing Director of SkillSoft, stated: “Our survey stems from a recent report by research firm Gartner indicating that employees who are not computer literate can cost an organization up to five times more in support than those who are proficient with technology.”
37% of survey participants felt it was very difficult to meet deadlines, 31% did not want to take over someone else’s job, while 28% expressed a desire to move to a new company. A third of those interviewed indicated plans to start their own business to avoid being managed by anyone.
