The first two flood warning stations in Vietnam have been installed in Bien Village and Nghéo Village, Thach Lam Commune, Thach Thanh District, Thanh Hoa Province.
According to the Thanh Hoa Provincial Flood and Storm Prevention Command, the flood warning devices have two main functions: measuring rainfall and storing rainfall data for scientific research, as well as sounding an alarm.
When the rainfall reaches a threshold that could trigger flash floods, this system will automatically sound alarms in three levels, from Level 1 to Level 3, corresponding to varying degrees of danger and flood risk. Each alarm can reach a power output of over 20W, allowing residents within a 3km radius to hear it and take precautions.
Currently, Hai Duong Company is collaborating with the Meteorology and Hydrology Institute to obtain information regarding the rainfall thresholds that could lead to flash floods, depending on the topography and characteristics of each area.
Based on historical statistics combined with practical surveys, Thanh Hoa Province has identified 25 high-risk areas across 9 mountainous districts that are susceptible to flash floods, affecting over 1,800 households and more than 7,800 individuals. The installation of these flood warning stations will enable residents to proactively prepare for flash floods, minimizing potential damages.
