Yesterday (July 11), the spokesperson for the world’s leading computer chip manufacturer officially confirmed that the Core 2 Duo chip will be officially launched on July 27 during an event held at Intel’s headquarters.
At this event, Intel will also officially announce the end of the Pentium era. Thus, after more than 6 years in existence, Intel’s Netburst chip generation seems to have become obsolete and must make way for the Core chips.
Intel is committed to ensuring that the Core 2 Duo chip will provide better performance and consume less power than the latest dual-core Pentium D chip. Earlier this year, Intel stated that the Core chip line would operate 20% better than AMD’s chips.
The desktop version of the Core 2 Duo chip, code-named Conroe, will be the centerpiece of the event on July 27. A similar version for laptops, code-named Merom, will be launched in August. Last month, Intel introduced the Xeon 5100 chip—a version of the Core architecture designed for servers.
Also on that day, Intel confirmed that the Montecito chip—a dual-core version of the Itanium chip—will also be launched on July 18.
