On May 2, Intel announced plans to invest $1 billion over the next five years to enhance Internet usage and provide IT training in developing countries. This is the latest move by the company to penetrate new markets.
The initiative, named “World Ahead,” aims to deliver high-speed wireless Internet to 1 billion people who currently lack access, while also training 10 million teachers in IT for educational purposes.
Intel’s program includes efforts to promote affordable desktop computers in schools and rural areas of developing nations, where the majority of the population cannot afford personal computers. The initiative also seeks to encourage the spread of WiMax (a wireless broadband access technology), which many investors believe is ideal for developing Internet infrastructure in impoverished regions.
Currently, Intel is experiencing a slowdown in the desktop computer market, as their affluent markets in the United States, Europe, and Japan have become saturated.
