Microsoft’s Internet Explorer Browser Faces New Security Flaw
Recently, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has been under scrutiny due to a series of serious security vulnerabilities. Now, it is faced with yet another setback as a new flaw has been discovered.
Yesterday, a security researcher revealed a new vulnerability in the Internet Explorer browser. This flaw could potentially be exploited by hackers to install spyware on users’ PC systems.
The security issue is related to how the browser handles Flash files with the extension ‘.swf’. Malicious attackers can use a Flash file to spoof the browser’s address bar, thereby concealing the actual URL of the website being displayed in the browser. This technique is one of the common phishing tactics observed recently.
However, security firm Secunia has rated the newly discovered vulnerability in Internet Explorer as “low risk” because the name of the Flash file is still visible in the browser window.
Secunia advises users to disable Active Scripting in Internet Explorer. This recommendation also serves to protect users from potential attacks through the createTextRange vulnerability.
