Archaeologists have begun excavating an area they hope conceals an ancient pyramid beneath a mysterious hill in Bosnia, a site long shrouded in legend.
The leader of the Bosnian research team noted that the mound rising above the small town of Visoko bears similarities to pyramid sites in Latin America that he has previously studied. If confirmed, it would be the first pyramid discovered in Europe.
Preliminary research of the hill, known as Visocica, has revealed a 45-degree slope with a perfect shape facing four directions and a flat summit. Beneath layers of soil and rock, workers uncovered a flat stone-paved entrance, leading to tunnels and large stones that may be part of the outer shell of the pyramid.
Satellite images and thermal imaging have revealed two smaller pyramid-shaped hills in the Visoko valley. Rescue workers have been dispatched to a tunnel believed to be part of an underground system connecting the three hills mentioned.
The excavation will continue over the next six months in the area just outside Visoko. “We hope to have preliminary results within the next three weeks,” said Semir Osmanagic, the research team leader.
