Peruvian Scientists Discover an Inca Tomb in Central Lima, Containing Numerous Skeletons and High-Quality Artifacts.

In a statement on June 22, local archaeologists revealed that a 500-year-old tomb was accidentally discovered during the renovation of the home of Hipolito Tica, a working-class man from the San Juan de Lurigancho neighborhood.
“It was an unexpected discovery. I am truly amazed and at a loss for words to describe it,” Tica shared.
Excavation team leader Julio Abanto told Reuters that the tomb contained many skeletons tightly wrapped in cloth, known as burial bundles, along with several pieces of pottery and high-quality jewelry made of gold and silver. This suggests that those buried may have belonged to the elite class of Inca society.
The Inca Empire once dominated the western part of South America in the 1400s before being conquered by Spanish invaders in 1533. Their legacy continues to be preserved today with treasures and sophisticated constructions, including the famous city of Machu Picchu, situated on a mountain slope nearly 2,500 meters high.

Tica hopes that with this new discovery, future generations of the San Juan de Lurigancho neighborhood will gain a greater appreciation for the rich history surrounding them.
