Italy to Assist Beijing in Building Solar Energy System for Olympic Village
Italy’s Environment Minister, Corrado Clini, announced that Italy will invest approximately 4 million euros (4.7 million USD) into this project.
This initiative is part of an environmental cooperation agreement signed between the Italian government and the Beijing authorities in 2002.
According to Pei Chenghu, Deputy Director of the Beijing Environmental Protection Committee, this project will help Beijing fulfill its commitment to hosting a green Olympic Games.
The solar energy system will be jointly developed by the Guoao Investment Development Company (China) and the Merloni TermoSanitari International Trading Company (Italy).
This system will supply hot water and electricity for 16,000 individuals during the competitions. After the Olympics, the system will continue to serve 2,000 residential apartments, benefiting around 6,000 residents.
Clini emphasized that solar energy will not be the only power source for the Olympic Village, as they have prepared additional energy supply systems.
Since 2002, Italy has invested nearly 40 million euros (47 million USD) to assist Beijing in environmental renovations across 17 projects.
