The Japanese Red Cross Society has committed to support Vietnam with 225 million yen (over 1.87 million USD) to plant and care for tens of thousands of hectares of coastal mangrove forests.
On March 22, representatives from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Vietnam Red Cross Society signed an agreement on the Mangrove Planting Program for the 2006-2010 period.
After 12 years (1994-2005) of implementing the mangrove reforestation and disaster prevention program funded by the Danish Red Cross and the Japanese Red Cross, Vietnam has planted and maintained nearly 22,400 hectares of coastal mangrove forests across eight provinces and cities, from Quang Ninh to Ha Tinh.
The planting of mangrove forests has contributed to reducing annual dike maintenance costs, helping many poor households improve their livelihoods through the economic potential of the forest, such as bee farming, selling seedlings, and harvesting wood from Casuarina trees.
