Over the past year, many Americans have followed his every step, starting in California and concluding his journey in New York on the evening of May 9.
At 40 years old, Vaught, who once weighed 410 pounds (186 kg), walked over 2,850 miles (4,575 km) and managed to lose 100 pounds (45 kg) in the process. Fifteen years ago, he was involved in an accident that resulted in the deaths of two pedestrians. This haunting experience led him to develop mental health issues and unhealthy eating habits.
In the three years that followed, he gained an additional 165 pounds (75 kg). Last year, feeling embarrassed after being unable to fit through a store door, he decided to walk across America as a form of self-healing. During his journey, he went through 15 pairs of shoes, 12 pairs of pants, 3 shirts, and 30 pairs of socks.
He created a website to document his journey, aptly named “TheFatManWalking.com”, and more importantly, he left his heavy past behind.
