Young botanist Nong Van Duy from the Dalat Institute of Biology has recently discovered a remarkable regeneration phenomenon in the flat-leaved pine species within several forests connecting the Gate of Heaven region to the Bi Doup mountain range in Lac Duong District, Lam Dong.
The flat-leaved pine, scientifically known as Pinus krempfii, is an ancient plant species that has existed since the time of the dinosaurs and was previously thought to be globally extinct due to the lack of a regeneration generation and the inability to propagate artificially.
According to this botanist, the phenomenon of flat-leaved pine shedding seeds and having a regeneration generation of 15 years or younger, without a preceding generation—except for some ancient trees—comes as a surprise and raises significant questions about the mysteries of this ancient plant species, as well as the ongoing environmental changes affecting its ecosystem.
Professor Phan Ke Loc from the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources confirms that this mountain forest range is the last remaining habitat for the flat-leaved pine (Pinus krempfii), which includes ancient trees with diameters of 1.5 meters and heights exceeding 30 meters.
