Smuggled Chickens from China Seized in Lang Son |
According to Mr. Tran Hieu, the team leader of Market Management Team No. 2 in Dong Dang, smuggling of chickens across the border has intensified again after a period of dormancy, as market management teams were diverted to other duties.
If pressure is applied, the smuggled chickens are often divided into smaller groups, with individuals using motorcycles or bicycles for transportation. Each vehicle carries a few chickens and later consolidates them. Market management teams have reported seizing over 1 ton of smuggled chickens just in the last week of October.
According to Mr. Do Van Duoc, head of the Lang Son Animal Health Sub-Department, poultry remains highly favored by consumers, making it difficult to curb the smuggling of poultry products. Since the beginning of this month, the sub-department has destroyed over 1 ton of smuggled chickens, which is more than in September. Law enforcement agencies report that 1 kg of chicken in Lung Nghiu (China) costs 7-8 Chinese Yuan. In Dong Dang, the price is 18,000 VND, and once it reaches Lang Son, the price rises to 28,000 VND. The further into the interior it goes, the higher the price of smuggled poultry becomes, making it hard to combat the influx of smuggled chickens, especially since the profit margins on smuggled poultry are currently nearly 100%.
Meanwhile, some law enforcement agencies show little interest in intercepting smuggled chickens, except for the market management forces and border guards.
