Volta Artificial Lake |
The Volta Artificial Lake, the largest in the world, is located in Ghana (East Africa). The artificial lake with the largest water volume is the Bratsk Reservoir on the Angara River in Russia.
The Akosombo Dam on the Volta River was commissioned in 1966. It provides power for a massive hydroelectric plant.
This dam was built near a significant water gorge. Behind it, water is stored in the valley of the main river and its tributaries, forming a basin that spans 8,484 km2, with a shoreline of 7,250 km.
Volta Lake is relatively shallow, and in certain areas, submerged land can be seen. The total water volume here is 148 km3. In comparison, the Bratsk Reservoir in Russia has a water volume of 169.25 km3.
