Dr. Tran Thi Phuong Thu – Director of Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital – announced that the hospital has successfully applied the Indirect Diode Laser 810nm for preserving the eyesight of children with bilateral retinoblastoma, after monitoring them for 1 to 5 years.
To date, six children have been successfully treated. This innovative treatment technique is being implemented for the first time in Vietnam.
According to Dr. Phuong Thu, retinoblastoma is a common malignant intraocular tumor in children under 5 years old. It ranks as the fourth most common cancer in children at Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital. In Vietnam, treatment has primarily involved enucleation, combined with systemic chemotherapy to prevent metastasis that could threaten the child’s life.
