Chinese officials are reportedly testing powerful laser lighting systems on highways to combat the problem of drowsy driving.
According to Oddity Central, last year, videos of multicolored lighting systems projected from signs on highways in China began to circulate on social media, leaving many confused about their purpose.

These devices, resembling an outdoor light show, are actually a experimental method to prevent drowsy driving, particularly among truck drivers. The most popular video of this unusual equipment was filmed on the Qingdao–Yinchuan Expressway, which stretches 1,600 km and is primarily used by heavy trucks traveling from the provincial capital of Ningxia to the port city of Qingdao.
It is unclear whether the laser lighting system is still being tested on this highway or when officials plan to implement this project. However, the installation of powerful laser lighting systems on highways has become a hot topic of debate on social media.
A person named Li mentioned that the laser lights designed to combat drowsiness quickly helped him regain energy and reduce exhaustion during long nights.
However, many people seem less than impressed. Some complained that the laser lights are overly distracting, while others stated that they are more likely to induce seizures rather than keep drivers alert.
“These lights will make me lose focus. They will make me sleepy once I get used to them,” commented one user.
Another shared: “Is the genius idea to blind drivers? Those who aren’t sleepy will lose their way. I could cause an accident in five seconds because of these lights.”
