Victoria, Australia, has recently begun testing a new type of self-luminous road marking, hoping to reduce the number of traffic accidents at night.

According to road safety experts in Victoria, 17 kilometers of rural roads without street lighting have been marked with a special luminous paint developed by Smarterlite, a safety equipment company based in Melbourne. This paint glows green at night without needing vehicle headlights.
Dave Jones, a representative from Smarterlite, stated: “Smarterlite’s road markings simply absorb light and luminesce. They store energy from sunlight and emit it for a long duration, even throughout the night.”
According to Smarterlite, these self-luminous road markings are designed to enhance visibility for drivers, especially when approaching curves and intersections, even in foggy conditions. Statistics show that nearly 40% of road traffic accidents in Victoria occur on rural roads at night, resulting in over 100 fatalities each year.
