Millions of young people around the world are at risk of hearing damage from listening to loud music on iPods and other devices, according to a survey by the Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID).
The survey indicated that more than half of young people aged 16-30 in the UK use MP3 players for more than an hour each day, which increases the risk of hearing damage. Experts state that this is due to modern music devices being equipped with headphones capable of producing significantly louder sounds than before.
Dr. John Low, the executive director of RNID, warned that if young people do not heed RNID’s advice on safer listening practices, they could suffer permanent hearing loss. Initial findings from RNID suggest that young people are unaware of the risks posed by MP3 players when they listen to music at high volumes.
