A powerful earthquake struck early on January 23 in Xinjiang, China, triggering a series of dangerous aftershocks.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that at approximately 2:09 AM (local time), a 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Wushi County, Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang, China, which may lead to casualties due to localized disaster effects.
It is noted that the earthquake had a depth of 22 km and was located about 140 km west of the city of Aksu, Xinjiang. Following the strong earthquake, a series of aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.5, 5.1, and 5.0 continuously occurred in the region, as well as along the border with Kyrgyzstan, which is adjacent to Xinjiang.

Residents in Keping County, Aksu Prefecture, which is close to the earthquake’s epicenter, reported that after the strong quake, many locals ran down the stairs to seek shelter, while some drove their cars to open areas to avoid aftershocks.
The USGS indicated that the strong earthquake could lead to casualties, and as of now, there have been reports of 6 injuries and over 47 houses collapsed due to the intense shaking. Many areas also experienced temporary power outages, which were quickly restored shortly thereafter.

Currently, rescue agencies have been deployed to the affected area to begin rescue operations, evacuation, and ensure the safety of the residents. According to the Xinjiang Fire and Rescue Department, a total of 182 vehicles, 800 personnel, and 32 dogs have been put on standby, ready for disaster relief missions.
Regarding the potential impact of the earthquake, the USGS also stated: “Significant damage may occur and spread in the coming time.”
