A local resident was left bewildered after catching a bizarre fish in southern Thailand.
Winit Pokting, from Satun Province, Thailand, was fishing in a canal near his home on May 11 when he hooked a strange pinkish-red creature.
The creature with pink color and glass-like teeth.
This elongated creature has a slender body, small eyes, and a mouth filled with glass-like teeth. Winit mentioned that he caught this creature during low tide and kept it in a water tank at home.
He said: “This is the first time I’ve seen a fish like this. I asked around, but no one knew what it was. At first, I thought it was an eel, but regular eels don’t look like this at all.“
Thanompong Buabanjong, an expert from the Satun Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center, identified the fish as a glass catfish – a species commonly found in mangroves or muddy river estuaries.
These fish are cave dwellers, typically residing in underwater caves during the day and emerging to feed at night.
Thanompong noted: “They are rarely seen because they tend to avoid boats and fishing lines.”
The glass catfish is a species originating from the Indian Ocean-Pacific region. They are commonly found in river mouths and coastal waters, and are sometimes enjoyed as a delicacy in Thailand.
