Lymphatic drainage massage, favored by celebrities like Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Aniston, helps reduce water retention and detoxify the body.
According to the Cleveland Clinic, lymphatic drainage massage is a gentle manual therapy used to alleviate swelling in the arms and legs caused by lymphatic obstruction. This therapy consists of two steps: the first step involves cleansing and releasing lymphatic fluid from the body’s tissues, while the second step focuses on reabsorbing and moving this fluid back to the lymph nodes.
Experts indicate that this massage therapy helps release lymph nodes, eliminating excess water and toxins, resulting in a slimmer and healthier appearance. Additionally, it supports the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic venous insufficiency, and lipedema.
Dr. Ardyce Yik, a naturopathic therapist at the Hong Kong Institute of Integrative Medicine, states that this method is scientifically recognized and can improve lymphedema caused by breast cancer. Lymphedema refers to the accumulation of fluid in soft tissues, occurring when the lymphatic system is damaged or obstructed.
Dr. Yik explains that a portion of the immune system supports the circulatory system. Its function is to maintain fluid balance, absorb excess fluid from tissues, and return it to the bloodstream. It also protects the body against infections.

Lymph nodes, which are shaped like kidney beans, are located along blood vessels and contain lymphocytes and white blood cells that help fight infections. They act as filters by trapping bacteria, viruses, and other infectious agents.
“When the body is infected, lymphocytes multiply in the lymph nodes. This is why we often experience swollen lymph nodes during infections,” Dr. Yik adds.
The lymphatic system also plays a significant role in eliminating toxins and waste from the body, destroying old or abnormally growing cells, such as cancer cells. At the same time, it transports fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the small intestine into the bloodstream.
The functionality of the lymphatic system affects the body’s ability to balance fluid levels, remove toxins, and fight infections. If it does not operate effectively, fluid can accumulate, leading to lymphedema and infections like cellulitis. A healthy lymphatic system prevents recurrent infections and guards against autoimmune diseases and cancer.
Overall, lymphatic drainage massage is safe and easy to perform. However, it is not suitable for individuals with a history of cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, blood clots, or infections.
