In September, McAfee is set to launch a new security software (codenamed “Falcon”) to compete with products from Symantec and Microsoft.
Falcon integrates features from McAfee’s existing security product line with a user-friendly interface that is easier to manage. McAfee has stated that they will quickly launch Falcon following the recent market entry announcement from competitor Microsoft.
According to McAfee, Falcon will help protect PCs against spam, viruses, spyware, and other threats such as phishing and rootkits. The software also includes features to prevent data loss, optimize PC performance, and secure wireless networks. This is the first product package to be released by McAfee this summer.
Similar to Microsoft and Symantec, McAfee is promoting Falcon as an easy-to-use security product. This product will be sold as a service, with users paying a long-term subscription fee, akin to the sales model of Windows Live OneCare (Microsoft) and Genesis (Symantec).
The security software market is being “heated up” by Microsoft’s entry, with plans to launch the OneCare security service next month at a price of $49.95 per year. OneCare will help protect three PCs simultaneously against viruses, spyware, and other threats. It is noted that OneCare was introduced by Microsoft in May 2005.
Currently, both Symantec and McAfee have yet to announce pricing for these new products. Falcon is expected to be unveiled by McAfee in September.
