While not as popular in Vietnam as the Red Valentine on February 14th, White Valentine is a day that many couples around the world eagerly anticipate. Occurring one month after Red Valentine, March 14th – White Valentine is an occasion for girls to find out if the boy they like reciprocates their feelings.
Let’s explore the historical significance of this day to better understand this special holiday – White Valentine (March 14).
Love feels fresh every day, and it seems that people love each other more after sweet dreams. Perhaps that’s why one Valentine’s Day feels insufficient. Thus, from the Land of the Rising Sun, another day for lovers was born, quickly embraced by young people – March 14, White Valentine.
White Valentine is also known as White Day. This day, which takes place exactly one month after Valentine’s Day, on March 14, is an opportunity for boys to return gifts to girls or vice versa.
The Origins of White Valentine
White Valentine originated in Japan, accompanied by a charming, simple, and heartwarming story. In 1965, a boy selling marshmallows wanted to respond to the affection of a girl who secretly loved him on Red Valentine (February 14), so he gifted her a large box of white marshmallows. This is the tale of White Valentine.

It seems that Red Valentine (February 14) is still not enough for those in love. Therefore, many young people in Japan added White Valentine to express their feelings to their loved ones. One month after Red Valentine, many young people reciprocate by giving gifts on March 14.
Notably, White Valentine was first celebrated in 1978, organized by the National Confectionery Industry Association of Japan with the purpose of encouraging boys to give gifts in return to girls. In Vietnam, while White Valentine is not as popular as Red Valentine, many young people still give special gifts to their partners, especially white chocolate.
The Significance of White Valentine
To this day, White Valentine has gradually been transformed into White Valentine – the Day of Reciprocity. On this day, there is nothing more meaningful than reciprocating gifts or heartfelt, sweet words to the girl you love. Never overlook March 14 to do loving things for the ladies.
Although White Valentine is not as widely celebrated as February 14, many still exchange gifts with their significant others on this day. Notably, during White Valentine, cookies, candies, and white chocolate are preferred over regular chocolate.

White Valentine is also referred to as White Day. Young people believe that if someone gives you cookies on this day, it means they love you; candies signify they like you, while white chocolate means “Let’s be friends!” In addition to food, other gifts like jewelry, handbags, shoes, scarves, and stuffed animals are also popular. In the USA, some boys even gift lingerie to their girlfriends.
Though there are three Valentine days in a year: Valentine’s Day, White Valentine, and Black Valentine; for couples in love, it is never enough. Thus, it’s not just on Valentine’s Day that we should express our love through words and gestures, but even on ordinary days. Let’s cherish and create wonderful moments for each other because love is a process that needs nurturing every day. As Valentine’s season approaches, I wish all couples joy, happiness, and a fulfilling love!
