Microsoft is currently developing an online storage service aimed at competing with Google’s Gdrive.
On April 20, Adam Sohn, a spokesperson for Microsoft, confirmed that the company is pursuing a project codenamed Live Drive. This new service will have the capability to search and share information across PCs and devices utilizing the “Shared Folder” feature found in Windows Live Messenger.
The project is currently in the research phase for solutions to share and synchronize data. This process is being actively supported by Microsoft’s acquisition of FolderShare, a company that specializes in file synchronization technology and remote access.
Chris Overd, one of the testers for Live Drive, stated that Live Drive will be an online storage service available through a paid subscription. The service will allow users to access files on Windows-based PCs via the web.
Live Drive appears to be quite similar to Google’s Gdrive, offering users a virtual drive online for data storage that can be accessed from anywhere.
Although information about Live Drive has emerged and is beginning to challenge Gdrive, Google has not yet issued any official comments.
